Module 4

Summary:
In chapter 9, Woolfolk discusses different learning strategies. The specific learning strategy I chose to focus on for this particular chapter was "reading strategies". Learning how to read effectively is significant for a student's educational advancement. On page 350, Woolfolk implements an effective reading strategy that can be used for any grade level above the elementary school, this strategy is "Reads", which stands for:
R Review heading and subheading
E Examine boldface words
A Ask, "What do I expect to learn?"
D Do it- Read!
S Summarize in your own words
Reflection:
Comprehending literature is extremely important. In order, for students to read effectively, they need to able to have a strategy when reading. I personally do not use the "READS" strategy, however, this specific strategy seems adequate to help students attain as much information as possible. This strategy is brief and easy to understand, therefore, easy to help students grasp the information. I certainly see myself implementing this basic strategy in my future classroom. I believe this reading method is simple and efficient in helping students think broadly about what they're reading. For instance, whenever I read- I always like to start by reading the heading and subheading to see what it is I will be learning. That being said,  Using the entire method will surely help a student understand the entire material.
Summary:
In chapter 10, Woolfolk discusses the concept of collaboration and cooperation. On page 399, Woolfolk stated, "Despite some inconsistencies, the majority of studies indicate that truly cooperative groups have positive effects- from preschool to college- on student's empathy, tolerance for differences, feelings for acceptance, friendships, self-confidence, awareness of the perspective of others, higher-level reasoning, problem solving, decision making, essay writing, and even school attendance", Not only is cooperation and collaboration essential in school, but it is essential for success in the future.
Reflection:
Collaboration and cooperation are probably one of the most essential skills to acquire. I mean think about it, many students after high school decide to immediately enter the working field. If there is something students need to be exceptional at-- it's being able to collaborate and work effectively with other people. Additionally, large numbers of occupations require people to work together towards a common goal. As a future teacher, I want to reinforce the importance of collaborating and cooperating with other peers.
Summary:
In chapter 11, Woolfolk discusses the concept of teachers' sense of efficacy. On page 438, Woolfolk states, "teachers sense of efficacy, defined as a teacher's belief that he or she can reach even difficult students to help them learn". In my opinion, a teacher's efficacy is one of the few characteristics that can accurately foresee students learning outcomes.
Reflection:
In my personal experience, teachers with a high sense of efficacy are the best teachers. According to Woolfolk, teachers with higher efficacy are more likely to enjoy their jobs, Woolfolk states, " when teachers have a higher sense of efficacy, they teach more effectively and their students learn more, and when student learn more, teachers self-efficacy grows" (Woolfolk, 438). Having a higher sense of efficacy does not only benefit teachers, it also benefits the student. In other words, self-efficacy is a critical variable because it influences students' motivation and learning. In the near future, I want to be able to provide the best educational experience to all my students and I assume that starts by having a high sense of self-efficacy.
