Module 5
Summary:
In chapter 12, Woolfolk deliberates on strategies to encourage motivation. On page 498, Woolfolk states, "Teacher must be patient, supportive person who never embarrasses the students because they made mistakes". In my opinion, teachers are the primary people to influence students and lead them in the right direction. Personal growth comes from mistakes and understanding that will lead to better success for all students.
Reflection:
I truly believe that every teacher who encourages will help motivate each student. Teachers have to be able to be patient and understanding of the students who do not know how to do a specific task right away. Everything takes time. It is Ok, if students make mistakes or if they do not know how to do something. A goal for every teacher should be to help students reach their academic goals. Additionally, teachers need to be able to create tasks that will challenge students. Creating assignments and activities that are challenging will motivate students to do better.
Summary:
In chapter 14, Woolfolk discusses the characteristics of effective teachers. On page 552, Woolfolk states, "When Barak Rosenshine and Norma Furst (1973) reviewed about 50 different studies of teaching, they concluded that clarity was the most promising teacher behavior for future research on effective teaching". Providing clear and concise instructions will allow students to learn more and think more emphatically about their teachers. In addition, Woolfolk argues that enthusiasm and warmth is a critical characteristic of an effective teacher. On page 553, Woolfolk states, " Two possible connections with enthusiasm are that when teachers are enthusiastic, they capture and hold student attention, and that enthusiastic teachers model engagement and interest and learning". In my opinion, student attention and interest will generate learning.
Reflection:
After reading about the characteristics of effective teaching I was convinced that clarity, enthusiasm, and warmth is essential in promoting a good learning environment. Implementing clear and concise instruction can really help a student progress and develop a passion for learning. If the students understand the material he/she will be more likely to enjoy school. Similarly, enthusiasm and warmth are vital characteristics of an effective teacher. I mean think back to when you were at school. How did your teachers act towards you? Did you feel respected? If you answered yes, well then you most definitely had a good experience. Teachers who are enthusiastic tend to have exceptional relationships with their students. This can also be associated with students liking the teacher and the class in general.
Summary:
In chapter 15, Woolfolk discusses the concept of assessment. On page 592, Woolfolk stated, "Assessment consists of many ways-- quantitative and qualitative -- to sample and observe student skills, knowledge, and abilities, so assessment in broader terms that include measurement along with many other techniques"
Reflection:
There are different techniques used to assess students. For example, providing pre-tests before an actual exam can be a great way to see where a student stands. This can help teachers brush up on certain materials before the official test is given. This gives students the opportunity to improve on material that they did not understand in the beginning. Overall, assessing students gives the teachers a broader sense of what the students needs to improve on and it allows teachers to track student's development.
Hi Alejandro,
ReplyDeleteI agree, that assessing students gives teachers a better understanding in the areas that need improvement. For example, one formative assessment teachers use in the school I work in is Kahoot. Kahoot is an effective app that allows students to be competitive with their classmates to see who knows more of the lesson content. The app also provides effective feedback to the student and teacher. For example, if majority of the class missed the correct answer of the final question. The teacher can look at the results in his own screen to discuss the reason the class received the incorrect answer to that question.
